The first section looks at the extraordinary success of antiretroviral therapy (ART)
in the North during the closing years of the last century, which directly led to the United Nations’ resolutions in 2000. The article then highlights that there are no longer doubts that access to ART results in a remarkable reduction in mortality, which may be as high as 95% in comparison to no intervention [4]. The other topic analyses operational issues in scaling up access to ART. Lastly the article provides future challenges for long term sustainability of ART in Africa.
