The Impact of Tobacco Use on Health and Socio-Economic Development in Africa: a status report

Sets out the impact of tobacco use on health in Africa. The report finds that interventions, especially the prevention of tobacco use, are excellent economic investments because, if applied early, they reduce the need for expensive treatment. Moreover, these measures can be implemented irrespective of the resource level of communities and countries. The report also examines the link between poverty and tobacco use, finding that the burden of tobacco disproportionately affects the poor.
